Therapeutic triad

Therapeutic Triad

The therapeutic triad refers to the three key elements needed to build a strong relationship between a counsellor and client. These were introduced by Carl Rogers, a famous psychologist. The triad helps create a safe and healing environment for therapy.

1. Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. A counsellor shows empathy by listening without judgment.

2. Unconditional Positive Regard

This means accepting the client fully, without criticism. The client feels respected and valued, no matter what they share.

3. Genuineness (Congruence)

The counsellor is honest and real in the session. They do not pretend to be someone else, which helps build trust.

Importance: These three elements make the client feel safe, supported, and open to change.
