a) Generalisation
Generalisation in historiography refers to the process by which historians draw broader conclusions from specific historical data. It involves identifying patterns, trends, or recurring themes across different periods or regions. Generalisations help make sense of complex events and facilitate comparative studies. For instance, the generalisation that colonialism led to economic exploitation can be applied across multiple colonies, despite local differences. However, historians must use caution, as excessive generalisation can oversimplify or distort unique contexts. A balance must be struck between recognizing individual events and drawing meaningful patterns. In recent historiography, especially with the rise of microhistory and subaltern studies, the limitations of grand generalisations have been acknowledged, emphasizing the need for nuanced analysis.
d) Postmodernism and History-writing
Postmodernism introduced a critical shift in the practice of history-writing by questioning the possibility of objective knowledge. Emerging in the late 20th century, postmodernist historians argue that all historical narratives are influenced by the historian’s perspective, cultural background, and the language used. It challenges the idea of a single, authoritative version of history, promoting instead the idea of multiple, equally valid narratives. Postmodernism draws attention to silences in history, marginalized voices, and the constructed nature of historical texts. While critics argue that postmodernism leads to relativism and undermines factual accuracy, its influence has encouraged historians to reflect more deeply on their methodologies, sources, and biases, making historical writing more inclusive and critical.
