Sleep Cycle
The sleep cycle refers to the progression through different stages of sleep that occur in a cyclic pattern throughout the night. Each cycle lasts approximately 90 to 120 minutes and is repeated 4 to 6 times during a typical night of sleep.
Stages of Sleep
- NREM Sleep (Non-Rapid Eye Movement):
- Stage 1: Light sleep; transition from wakefulness to sleep.
- Stage 2: Deeper relaxation; heart rate and body temperature drop.
- Stage 3: Deepest sleep, known as slow-wave or delta sleep; essential for physical restoration.
- REM Sleep (Rapid Eye Movement):
- Brain becomes more active; most dreaming occurs.
- Body is paralyzed temporarily to prevent acting out dreams.
- Essential for memory consolidation and mood regulation.
Importance of Sleep Cycle
- Essential for physical and mental recovery.
- Supports memory, learning, and emotional health.
- Disruptions in the sleep cycle can lead to fatigue, irritability, and cognitive impairments.
Maintaining a regular sleep schedule and good sleep hygiene helps in sustaining healthy and restorative sleep cycles.
