Relationship Between HIV and STIs
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) are closely linked because they are transmitted through similar routes and often occur together. Here’s how they are related:
1. Common Modes of Transmission
Both HIV and STIs are spread through unprotected sexual contact, blood transfusion, and from mother to child during birth or breastfeeding.
2. STIs Increase the Risk of HIV
When a person has an STI, such as herpes or syphilis, it may cause sores or inflammation. These make it easier for HIV to enter the body during sex.
3. HIV Can Worsen Other STIs
HIV weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight off other STIs. This can lead to more severe symptoms and complications.
4. Co-Infection is Common
People with one STI are often found to be infected with another, including HIV. Testing and treating all STIs helps prevent the spread of HIV.
Therefore, preventing and treating STIs is also an important step in controlling HIV.
