Unheard Voices: Overflowing Garbage in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri Block 27

By: A Local Citizen Journalist

In the bustling neighborhood of Trilokpuri Block 27 in East Delhi, a serious sanitation issue has been festering for months — quite literally. Despite repeated complaints by residents, the area’s garbage collection point has turned into a mountain of unattended waste. This local issue, though deeply affecting the daily lives of hundreds, remains unreported by mainstream media.

Overview of the Problem

The garbage collection area in Block 27 has become a dumping ground for not only household waste but also construction debris and even biomedical waste. The trash overflows onto the narrow streets, blocking walkways and attracting stray animals and mosquitoes.

Residents report that garbage has not been collected for over two weeks at a time. During monsoon, the situation becomes worse as rainwater mixes with the waste, creating a breeding ground for diseases like dengue and chikungunya.

Voices from the Ground

  • Radha Devi (Homemaker): “My children fall sick every month. We can’t even keep our windows open because of the smell and flies.”
  • Irfan (Shopkeeper): “My shop is right next to the dump. Customers avoid coming in. I’ve lost almost half of my daily sales.”
  • Asha (Student): “It’s embarrassing to invite friends home. The whole street stinks. We feel like we don’t matter to the authorities.”

Attempts Made by the Community

The Resident Welfare Association (RWA) has submitted written complaints to the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) three times over the past six months. Though sanitation workers were sent once, no permanent solution has been provided. Local councillors have also been contacted, but no action has followed.

Why This Matters

Garbage collection is a basic civic service. When such fundamental duties are ignored, the health, dignity, and quality of life of citizens are compromised. Children in Trilokpuri are growing up with the constant sight and smell of waste — a visual that tells them their concerns are invisible.

The Role of Citizen Journalism

This report is an attempt to bring visibility to a neglected issue that affects real lives. Mainstream news channels often miss such hyper-local problems due to lack of reach or commercial priorities. But for the people of Trilokpuri Block 27, this is the most urgent crisis in their lives today.

As concerned citizens, it is our duty to highlight such problems. Media starts from the ground — from stories that affect everyday people. Through photos, interviews, and direct observation, this report aims to demand accountability and drive change.

Call to Action

We urge the EDMC and local councillors to take immediate steps:

  • Ensure daily garbage collection and clearance of backlog
  • Install CCTV cameras to monitor illegal dumping
  • Launch a sanitation awareness campaign in the area

Until this issue is resolved, citizen journalists will continue to report and document the conditions faced by the residents of Trilokpuri Block 27.
