What is Overmind in Aurobindo’s Philosophy?
In Sri Aurobindo’s evolutionary cosmology, the Overmind is a high level of consciousness that lies just below the Supermind. It plays a crucial role in the transition between the divine consciousness and the manifest world.
The Overmind represents cosmic consciousness—a realm where the unity of existence is still perceived, but is expressed through a diverse multiplicity. It is the plane where the One becomes the Many, but without losing connection with the original Unity. In the Overmind, many divine aspects such as wisdom, strength, love, and harmony manifest as separate divine personalities or powers.
While the Overmind reveals a vast spiritual awareness, it still allows division and duality. Hence, it is not the final state of unity, which only the Supermind can deliver. The Overmind is an important stage in the ascent of consciousness and serves as a platform for divine inspiration, vision, and intuition in the spiritual journey.
