Denotified Tribe
Denotified Tribes (DNTs) are communities that were once listed as ‘criminal tribes’ under the British-era Criminal Tribes Act of 1871. After India gained independence, this Act was repealed in 1952, and these communities were “denotified.” However, they continue to face social stigma, poverty, and exclusion. Most DNTs lack access to education, employment, housing, and basic rights. The government has taken steps like setting up commissions and welfare schemes to support their development. Social workers play a key role in raising awareness and helping them access benefits. DNTs need special attention to ensure their dignity, inclusion, and justice in society.
